Tampa Bay Lightning (you may have heard of them -- they're in a little hockey tournament these days) owner Jeff Vinik got the profile treatment from the New York Times on Sunday (image above is from that story) -- with the emphasis on his vision for Tampa Bay's Channel District bordering his teams home ice, Amalie Arena.
Vinik plans to invest $1 billion -- with an assist from Bill Gates' investment arm -- in 40 acres now dominated by parking lots and empty post-industrial property between the arena and downtown's towers. Over the next decade, Vinik expects to build a new medical school, loads of new residential blocks, plenty of shopping and dining options and a new 450-room convention hotel.
