Tampa Celebrates Social Media Day
On Tuesday, June 30th, passionate practitioners of social media throughout the Tampa Bay area will gather to celebrate their favorite pastime at Social Media Day Tampa Bay presented by Reeves Volkswagen. The event will take place at Ferg’s Live (490 Channelside Dr, Tampa, FL 33602) from 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. and is a party for those who work and play on various social media platforms.
“It is a way to connect those from different industries that are all actively leveraging the power of social media,” said Ryan Sullivan, organizer for Social Media Day Tampa Bay. “We want to celebrate its value in business and connect those that have experience so they can push it to the next level.”
Mashable, the preeminent source for social media thought leadership and world news, created Social Media Day in 2010 as a way to recognize and celebrate social media’s impact on global communication. Each year, Social Media Day is celebrated in cities worldwide.
Locally, Social Media Day will be commemorated with a celebration that will include plenty of food and drinks and a number of raffle prizes for local companies including Reeves Volkswagen, Datz and the Tampa Bay Water Bike Co. Guests will be asked to donate $5.00 to Tech Start, an organization that creates STEM clubs for after school program in the Tampa Bay area.
For more information about Social Media Day Tampa Bay or to join in the fun visit their Facebook page. If you plan on tweeting or Instagramming while you are there, the official hashtag is #SMDayTampa.

Drive-by shooting in east Tampa sends man to the hospital with minor injuries
Sweatiest place in the US? No sweat.
Tampa Bay, it turns out, is hot in the summer.
We'll pause a moment to let you appreciate that statement. If you're standing outside, you'll know immediately what we're talking about.
The folks at Honeywell Fans and Environmental Health & Engineering have decided that Tampa Bay ranks as the Sweatiest City in America. Turns out it's not just the heat but also the humidity.
Here’s how the researchers spelled it out:
"When creating the first-ever sweatiest cities ranking with this new set of criteria, we looked at a range of environmental factors including average temperature and humidity levels during summer months, population and housing density, and average wind speed, which has an evaporative cooling effect," said Dr. Ted Myatt, ScD, Environmental Health & Engineering. "Geographic location has a major influence on temperatures, but so does infrastructure like residential buildings or heavy industry, which can trap heat or contribute to heat output. It's no wonder why so many songs are written about hot times and summer in the city.”
Given the amount of water and coastal breezes we have in Tampa Bay, we're not sure we agree with that standard. And it's a dubious honor at best. But, OK, we'll own it.
First of all, sweating is good for you. It clears out your pores and cleanses your body of toxins. Just ask that guy in the hotbox at the gym.
Frankly, all these clean pores and glowing skin probably helped us land on Travel + Leisure's list of the country's places with the most attractive people. Even when we're hot and sweaty we're also just plain hot.
We know we're hot, which is why T+L put us on their Snobbiest Cities list.
Secondly, we have this little thing here in Tampa Bay called air-conditioning. You may have heard of it.
We have some of the best indoor activities in Florida, all of them cooled by Willis Carrier's contribution to the civilized world.
So when you've schvitzed enough, step inside the cooling walls of one of these spots:
MOSI, the Museum of Science and Industry: While away an afternoon in the IMAX Dome movie theater and the planetarium, then roam the exhibits for Kids in Charge, built a robot or experience the cooling breezes of the hurricane simulator. The new driverless car will transport you to your own car without breaking a sweat.
Glazer Children's Museum: Downtown's sprawling children's museum has three floors of activities to keep the whole family cool. The enormous water table on the ground floor lets the kids do hands-on exploring; the climbing maze gets them to the second floor while having an adventure. Let them spent the heat of the day pretending to be firefighters, veterinarians, Publix workers, airplane engineers, construction workers, and much more. Visit the third floor through September to explore the world of the Wizard of Oz.
Tampa Museum of Art: Next to the Glazer, you'll find Tampa Bay's floating jewel box filled with artistic treasures. The modern museum currently hosts a traveling exhibit featuring the works of pop art founder Andy Warhol. It also has its own collection of art ranging from ancient Greek to thoroughly modern. And -- luckily for both you and the art -- it's all climate-controlled! The museum is home to Sono Cafe, which has al fresco seating under the building's 46-foot deep overhang -- a shady spot where you can catch a breeze and avoid the sun. After sunset, the museum itself comes to life with a shimmering light display: "Sky (Tampa)" by artist Leo Villareal.
Tampa Bay History Center: 12,000 years of Tampa Bay history waits for you under one roof. Explore the roots of the unconquered Seminoles along with the industry that gave the Cigar City its nickname. Upstairs, you'll learn that about Tampa Bay's contribution to cowboy culture and to U.S. military history. Hands-on exhibits bring the region's deep history and diverse culture to life.
Florida Aquarium: When the temperature climbs outside, the deep blue sea will cool you down inside the Florida Aquarium. Discover Florida's watery environment, from springs and swamps to mangroves and the open bay and see 20,000 sea creatures along the way. Touch a horseshoe crab. Get your picture taken with a shark. Or bring your swim gear and conquer the aquarium's outdoor water park, Explore A Shore, to stay cool.
Tampa Theatre: Lose yourself in another time when you settle into your seat at downtown's historic movie palace, built in 1926. The ornate plaster work, the balcony and the giant organ make this landmark a Tampa Bay treasure. Check out their regular offerings as well as their Summer Classics series for a way to beat the heat and enjoy a great piece of cinema at the same time.
Still itching to get outside? Sundown is the perfect time to hit Tampa Bay's outdoor attractions without breaking a sweat.
Busch Gardens Tampa/Adventure Island: Lets just get this out of the way: Both parks are great places to visit during the day, whether you stay cool with the wind whipping past you on Cheetah Hunt or get soaked as your raft sluices through the Colossal Curl. But night time offers an entirely different view of both parks. During Summer Nights, which starts this weekend, Busch Gardens stays open until midnight with rides, shows, concerts and activities all under the cool(er) night sky. Island Nights, which is already running, lets you enjoy the water park until 9 p.m.
Tampa Riverwalk: Downtown's signature destination takes on a whole new light after the sun goes down. Colored lights add dimension to the Riverwalk, along with downtown's bridges (lit by "Agua Luces," an art installation from 2012), the minarets of Plant Hall, Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, and the Tampa Museum of Art.
Tampa TopGolf: Head out to Brandon and spend the cool of the evening practicing your drive at Tampa Bay's newest golf attraction. TopGolf has more than 100 bays on three levels, along with a restaurant, pool tables, Xbox stations, and a rooftop bar. The whole place is open until 2 a.m.
Ybor City: Pull up a chair at one of the outdoor tables lining Seventh Avenue for dinner after the sun goes down. Tampa Bay's historic Latin district has plenty of places to eat, drink and make merry after the sun goes down. Try a craft beer at Coppertail Brewing Co. or sip a cider at Cigar City Cider & Mead.
Tampa Bay's got so many ways to beat the heat, you'll probably break a sweat trying to do them all!

iTrekkers: A Tampa Bay fish story
The sun had just cleared the eastern horizon as we loaded our gear into the waiting boat. Our destination: the Gulf of Mexico, 50 miles off the coast on the last day of red snapper season. So, no dawdling.
The official John's Pass farewell party -- he'll be waiting when we get back.
A few minutes later, our 28-foot Contender motored through John’s Pass heading west with Captain Kyle at the controls. More than that I cannot tell you. Good fishing spots fall into the category of “take to your grave” secrets. Plus, Capt. Kyle promised to deep-six anybody who Facebooked our position. I’m pretty sure he was joking. Nevertheless, my lips – and my phone’s GPS – are sealed.
Florida Boy, Rob, in his element.
On board his boat, Captain Kyle had four of us, three landlubbers and a Florida boy truly in his element. At least one of us (ahem), has never been out of sight of land. So watching the hotels lining the shore sink beneath the horizon proved the trip’s first thrill.
We had arranged our trip through Tampa Bay-based iTrekkers. Founder Tom Mulliez recruits local fishing guides for trips off-shore, near-shore or in the flats along the water’s edge. He vets each of his dozen or so captains personally – no one pays to join his stable of guides, something he’s very proud of.
The day's thunderheads, already building over the gulf.
Captain Kyle opened the throttle and we skimmed along the surface of the glassy gulf at more than 30 knots. Where the sea met the sky, the day’s thunderheads piled themselves higher and higher.
After about an hour, Kyle brought the boat to a halt over a patch of shimmering blue sea that held promise.
“We’ll take a break here,” he said as he handed out fishing poles.
"Don't show any numbers," Captain Kyle said when the camera came out.
Thirty miles off the coast of Florida, the Gulf of Mexico is about 100 feet deep. Kyle’s sonar showed the bottom in multicolored lines with rainbow-striped blobs floating above it. The floating blob were the fish. What kind, and how many? We were about to find that out.
Kyle’s mate for the day was his cousin, Alex. They’re both young guys with fishing in their blood. They’re the third generation of their family to run fishing tours out of Tampa Bay. Kyle has been piloting boats half his life. We knew he would steer his right.
Alex loads a frozen threadfin onto the twin hooks.
Kyle and Alex loaded a frozen threadfin onto each of our hooks with a flick of their wrists. After that, the rest was up to us.
Lesson Number 1 of fishing for snapper: No casting. The fish are schooling right under the boat. We just dropped the bait over the side.
Sonar gives us a peek beneath the waves.
Red snapper and red grouper live together on the hard bottom of the Gulf. They also gather around rocky outcroppings and shipwrecks. Kyle had positioned us directly over a piece of clear bottom to make things easy for us first-timers.
The silvery threadfins quickly disappeared into the dark water. Soon after, they hit bottom and the line went slack: Time to start paying attention.
1 minute. 2 minutes. 3 minutes.
Now, I must tell you, I’m a mountain boy from Virginia. I know creeks and rivers and lakes. I’m a freshwater guy. I had no idea what I’d find on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico.
I quickly learned Lesson Number 2 of snapper fishing: When you feel someone down there tugging on the bait, starting reeling him in – fast.
The fish that hit my line bent my pole double. I cranked like crazy holding the end of the pole – as instructed – in my armpit to get extra leverage. It felt a little silly, but it worked like a charm.
Captain Kyle and the rest of the boat cheered me on. We all wanted to see what was on the end of that line. About 30 seconds later, I had cranked my first red snapper up from the deep. The fish that emerged into the light was bigger and heavier than I’d expected – quite a surprise for a guy used to catching bass and perch.
Snapper keepers.
Alex freed the bright red fish from the hook and held it against the gauge on the side of the boat: A keeper. A door in the bottom of the boat opened to reveal an in-board ice chest. In my snapper went.
One down, lots more to go.
If it was that easy, this was going to be a short day.
But the point of fishing, as any fisherman knows, is not actually the catching of fish. It’s the fun and camaraderie. Over the course of the day on the water, my colleagues spent hours getting to know each other better and building stronger connections outside the office. It really is true that true that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work.
But this was not going to be a bad day fishing by any means.
By lunch time, everyone had bagged several fish. Captain Kyle kept us moving, guided both by decades of family lore and by a little modern technology. Some spots worked; some spots didn’t. That’s fishing.
Live bait. They have no idea what's ahead for them.
At one point, as the sun climbed overhead, Captain Kyle and Alex decided to try something new. The tiny fish that had been wiling away the morning in the boat’s live well went overboard by the handfuls. Alex tied a lure big as my hand to another pole and cast it far out into the water. We were fishing for amberjack now. Things were about to get serious.
Patrick vs the Amberjack
An amberjack is a large shiny-sided fish that flashes through the water like lightning. Unlike snapper and grouper, amberjack live near the surface and hunt live food. Soon after Alex cast his lure, the amberjack were biting. Patrick quickly found himself on the business end of the pole, a cup-shaped brace for the rod strapped around his waist, reeling for all he was worth. He and the amberjack fought for more than 20 minutes, moving from the port side of the boat to the bow to starboard. Who would exhaust himself first?
Rob 1, Amberjack 0
Ultimately, Patrick won and posed for pictures with his prize. But the victory was short-lived. It wasn’t amberjack season, so back into the sea it went.
Still, Patrick had a real fish story to tell.
Our haul, on ice dockside.
We fished until mid-day. By 2 p.m. or so, the boat’s icy hold held our limit of snappers and groupers along with a few king mackerel and some smaller fish. It was a good day’s work. We turned toward home.
Ninety minutes later, we were back at John’s Pass. Kyle unloaded our catch into a dockside cart then, working quickly at a nearby table, fileted our catch and packed the pieces for us to haul home.
Waiting for their piece of the bounty.
A flotilla of pelicans loitered just beyond the table like kayakers waiting for a home run outside Candlestick Park. They proved equally good catchers.
Baked grouper for dinner.
Nine hours after we left the dock, we were all headed home with a bounty of fish ready for the freezer. My family had grouper for dinner that night. It was light and fluffy and delicious. It was also filled with great memories of my day on the water.

Fathers Fostering Happy Families
What comes to mind when you hear primary caregiver? A mother waking up at the crack of dawn, getting the house cleaned, food cooked, kids bathed and everything running like a well-oiled machine; or do you think of a mother getting up and going to work while the father stays home and keeps things running? Usually it is the former.
Let’s admit it, when you think of stay-at-home fathers, you think of the house looking like a tornado hit and the kids running wild. Society has painted and stapled this picture into our minds whenever they portray a father staying with the kids for a day in any television show or movie. It usually ends with mom coming to the rescue and making everything better again. But let’s be honest, there are fathers out there that are just as amazing as caregivers that choose to stay at home with the kids while the mothers work. Stay-at-home fathers should not be seen as taboo or as a disaster; in fact, Pew Research Center has noted that the number of stay-at-home fathers is on the rise. In 1989, the number was at 10% of fathers staying home, and as of 2012, that has become 16% of fathers staying home. They also noted that 21% say that the reason is simply to take care of their families and not a result of losing their jobs or being unable to find work.
Not only are stay-at-home fathers on the rise, they are also making a big impact on how children grow up. Yes mothers are important and we would literally not be here without them, but fathers have just as big of an impact on our lives as mothers do. When fathers are in our lives, we get to learn about things from his perspective and that can mold us to be either good men or good women. Huffington Post says that the way fathers hold us as children can impact us. They say fathers tend to hold us out into the world, while mothers hold us facing them. By the father holding us facing the world, we learn how to engage with our surroundings. Mothers are practically wired to make us feel protected at all times and worry about every little thing in the world we may have a run-in with; while this is a good thing, it can also make us grow up to be sheltered and unable to deal with real world problems. Fathers on the other hand, they teach us the good and the bad and encourage us to explore the world.
Boys in particular need that male presence in their lives. Having that male presence is important because, no matter how much mothers try, there are just some things that only a father can teach their sons. Melanie Horn Mallers, a professor at California State University, told Huffington Post that when boys do not have that male presence around, were not a good at handling stress as those who had a strong male presence growing up. This is because fathers teach their sons how to handle stressful situations and develop problem-solving skills. Mallers says that playtime with their fathers have also helped to establish positive relationships. Fathers’ rough-house with their sons and this teaches them limits: how to play, when to stop, what to do; this can lead to strong friendships and confidence in the world.
For those future fathers that need all the help to prepare them for fatherhood, the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County’s Family Resource Centers in Central Tampa offers parenting classes called “24/7 Dads” that focuses on men being the stay-at-home parent and how they should handle it. The classes are every 4th Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. and registration is required. Fathers play such an important role in kids’ lives and it is about time we start getting used to fathers stepping to the plate and becoming stay-at-home dads.
