TIA adds new EV charging stations

Starting this summer, Tampa International Airport, Tampa Bay's gateway to the world, will expand the number of electric vehicle charging stations available to travelers.

The 15 new charging stations will bring the airport's total chargers to 18. Airport officials say the additional stations are part of TIA's ongoing commitment to sustainability.

"We recognize that the popularity of electric vehicles is growing, and we want to support that," said Paul Ridgeway, the Airport's director of maintenance, who is overseeing the project. "These new stations will accommodate the desire of the passengers using these vehicles to recharge while they are here."

Right now, the airport can charge only six vehicles at a time at stations located in the cell phone waiting lot and valet parking areas. Plans call for installing four units each in the Short Term, Long Term and Economy Parking Garages.
Electric vehicle drivers will get an addition bonus: some of the choicest parking spots in each of the garages. The stations in the Long Term Parking Garage will be located on the second floor near the walkways to the main terminal, while the economy parking stations will be located on the first floor.

"If you drive an electric vehicle, you can actually park in some of the most convenient locations within each garage," Ridgeway said.

The addition of more EV charging stations is part of the airport's sustainability program, and just one of a number of environmentally-friendly initiatives in the works at Tampa International.

Along with the new charging stations, TIA is in the midst of a $1 billion renovation that will add 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, a new rental-car facility and a people-mover traveling between there and the main terminal.

Alas, after 11 judges, 13 years, 14 seasons, and 533 episodes the American Idol era has come to an end, but what’s been left behind is now a legacy. With some of the highest ratings on television Fox went on to create eight different American Idol spin-offs, an attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and influenced the start of many other singing competition shows, still going strong today. So, this begs the question: why end it?

The high ratings they once had were no longer there. The audience for American Idol had left. The ratings coming in the past few years were numbers expected for scripted once a week shows. However, this wouldn’t cut it for the money that’s put into such a production. Fox knew that its product was no longer in demand and did the smart thing.

In building your brand, you may find that a product does really well and becomes really high in demand, but then one day it isn’t anymore. What your brand does next is critical. There is the option to try and find a way to make the product better, and find out what is making the product a non-essential. If you come up empty be sure you’re not losing more than you’re making. If this is true for your brand start thinking of new ideas.

In Fox’s case with American Idol by the time their ratings started dropping the revised, better versions of their show were already out there like The Voice and America’s Got Talent.Almost every network has their own American Idol with a twist. The demand was no longer there. Despite losing what once were their two biggest shows last season (American Idol and Glee) Fox is looking forward with their fall schedule with shows Empire, who had record high ratings in their first season alone. With these new shows I have no doubt Fox will be back on top of the rating game in no time.

Do you think Fox could revive American Idol? Share your thoughts in a comment below. Your responses could be used for a future article.

Busch Gardens Tampa: Ride, Slide & Dine for $99

Now through June 14, Tampa Bay visitors can buy a $99 pass to Busch Gardens Tampa that also gets them access to Busch Gardens' Adventure Island water park.

The "Ride, Slide & Dine" ticket lets you choose two visits and two meals at either park. Tickets must be bought by June 14 and can be used by Oct. 11. They're only available for purchase online.

Tampa Bay is built for summer, and few things say summer like a trip down Adventure Island's Colossal Curl raft ride.

After spending a day rafting the waves at Adventure Island, cross the road and ride the Congo River Rapids at Busch Gardens Tampa. Busch Gardens also lets you dive like a bird of prey on Falcon's Fury, North America's tallest drop tower, or race like a hunting cat on the Cheetah Hunt roller coaster.

If you prefer watching animals to moving like them, move it to the Edge of Africa exhibit to see Busch Gardens Tampa's newest additions: baby endangered ring-tailed lemurs (King Julian would approve).

Between June 27 and August 16, you can experience the thrills of Busch Gardens Tampa long past sunset when the park begins its "Summer Nights" parties. If you're still itching for another raft ride, try "Island Nights" at Adventure Island. Both parks stay open until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer.

Enjoy film, food & beer at Tampa Theatre's BeerFest

The answer to the name of Tampa Theatre's 2015 BeerFest is, in fact, within itself. "O Brewer, Where Art Thou" will feature seven of Tampa Bays best brewer(ie)s alongside some of our favorite local restaurants.

Snack on samples from Fodder and Shine while enjoying a delicious Coppertail Free Dive IPA. Or perhaps you'd prefer to nosh on something from Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe while sipping on one of Ulele's house-made beers. We could go on, but more importantly, you should know this themed event isn't *all* about the beers -- proceeds benefit the Tampa Theatre's artistic and educational programs, as well as its ongoing preservation and restoration.

If you're so inclined, the theatre is encouraging patrons to embrace the theme by dressing up as their favorite Soggy Bottom Boy (Related: Anyone know where we can get some Dapper Dan?) or an "O Brewer" inspired costume.

The event is scheduled for June 20 at the Tampa Theatre in Downtown Tampa. Premium sampling ($70) begins at 7 p.m. Grand sampling tickets ($45) get you in the door at 8 p.m. You can buy tickets here OR enter to win a pair of grand sampling tickets below.

CUTENESS ALERT: Baby Endangered Ring-tailed Lemurs Recently Born at Busch Gardens!

Busch Gardens recently welcomed three baby endangered ring-tailed lemurs to the more than 12,000 animals that call the park home. First-time mother Canada gave birth to Squirt on March 19, and twins Schweps and Seagramms were born to Ginger on March 27.

Guests will be able to see the lively baby lemurs in the Edge of Africa area of the park in June as the animal care team continues to introduce them to their new habitat.

These births come as a result of recommendations from the Ring-tailed Lemur Species Survival Plan through the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. Ginger and Canada arrived at Busch Gardens from the Duke Lemur Center in 2013. Spike, the sire of all three babies, came to the park from the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in 2004.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, ring-tailed lemurs are the most endangered mammal group in the World due to habitat destruction, hunting and the exotic pet trade. The SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Conservation Fund contributes to the Duke Lemur Center’s SAVA Conservation Project in Madagascar, where awareness about alternative farming practices and reforestation help restore lemur populations.

Be sure to visit the baby lemurs in early June! And for again-and-again access to all the fun, play for a day and play ALL YEAR with a Busch Gardens Fun Card! Plus, be the first to know about new events, special deals and future announcements by following the park’s blog at BuschGardensTampaBlog.com, or “like” the Busch Gardens Facebook page, and follow @buschgardens on Twitter and Instagram.

A long trek through Nepal to deliver a stiff drink

Sometimes the most important thing you do on a reporting trip is not reporting. So it was two Saturdays ago, when I found myself scaling a mountain in Nepal's Himalayan foothills to deliver a bottle of whiskey to an 80-year-old woman.

How to See Tampa Bay from an e-Boat

The folks at Tampa Bay's online magazine, 83 Degrees, took a ride on Tampa eBoats and fell in love with the unique perspective the boats offer on our fair community.

They provide a rundown of 12 things you can see from an e-Boat. Having piloted an e-Boat myself,I can say that the electric boats -- available for rent at the docks outside Tampa Convention Center -- are a great way to explore downtown and definitely give you a new perspective on the area. The best part is: the boats are low-powered and casual enough that even a landlubber like myself can drive one confidently after a quick lesson.

An e-Boat can already get you to waterfront dining at Rick's on the River, a short run up the Hillsborough River. Soon, it'll also get you to Ulele and Water Works Park, where the City of Tampa is installing new docks.

Some of the highlights from 83 Degrees day of sightseeing on the water:

Tampa Riverwalk

Get a new angle on Tampa Bay's newly completed waterfront thoroughfare. The new Kennedy Boulevard Plaza, with its sail-like canopies and seating areas, is particularly nice from the water. Wave to the folks on shore -- Tampa Bay's a friendly place.

Wildlife

Dolphins, manatees and seabirds are all around you when you're on the water in Tampa Bay -- a reminder that just beyond the skyscrapers and sidewalks, the river and bay are still very much wild spaces. Tread gently for the sake of our aquatic neighbors, particularly the manatees.

Rowing teams

See all that graffiti on the seawalls? That gets there each winter when college rowing teams from the Northeast and Midwest flock to Tampa Bay for tournament at a time when their venues up north are frozen over. During the rest of the year, rowers in their graceful long boats ply the river and bay almost every day -- some from local high schools, others from rowing clubs or lone rowers out for a bit of exercise. Beats a machine in the gym.

Architecture

Some of Tampa Bay's most iconic buildings are visible from the water. You can admire the sweeping facade of the sprawling Tampa Convention Center -- one of the few waterfront convention centers in the country -- then ponder the cylindrical Rivergate Tower, which was designed using the Fibonacci mathematical sequence. Across the river from Rivergate, you can take in the silver domed minarets of historic Plant Hall, once the Gilded Age resort known as the Tampa Bay Hotel. Back on the east side of the river, check out the ultra-modern Tampa Museum of Art perched above the river and Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The museum's perforated metal skin shimmers each night with the lighted art installation "Sky (Tampa)" by New York-based artist Leo Villareal. Which brings us to ...

Lights on Tampa

From dusk to dawn, downtown's waterfront glows with shifting hues of colored lights. From the river, you can see Agua Luces, an artwork that lights downtown's five bridges in a rotating spectrum of color. The Tampa Riverwalk's canopies are also alight at night, as is the Aloft Downtown Tampa hotel, Tampa Museum of Art and parts of Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. Taking out the last eBoat of the day will show you a side of Tampa Bay day-time visitors miss out on.
