This year has been dubbed the Year of the Gibbon by the International Union for Conservation and Nature (IUCN) The Year of the Gibbon initiative is all about bringing awareness to the plight of these unique primates. Throughout the year, I’ll be publishing blogs about these amazing animals and ways we can help them!
What exactly IS a gibbon?
So, before we can bring awareness to the struggles gibbons are facing, I will help you become aware of what a gibbon is! Gibbons are primates, apes more specifically. Most people are familiar with great apes, such as gorillas, chimpanzees, and orangutans. However, few are aware that there are actually lesser (meaning smaller, not less great!) apes: the gibbons. There are 17 species, all native to Southeast Asia.
Busch Gardens is home to two White-Cheeked Gibbons, Kodo and Milo. Stay tuned for upcoming blogs highlighting each of them! You can find Kodo and Milo in Jungala, which is home to all of the Asian species in the park.
What threats to gibbons face?
Like many animals, gibbons are threatened by habitat destruction. Some consider gibbons to be the most threatened primates on the planet. Unfortunately, some estimate that they may be the first major primate species to go extinct in our lifetime! One of the causes of deforestation is the palm oil industry. Palm oil is in many substances we use. By purchasing certified sustainable palm oil, we can ensure that we are supporting companies who have made the commitment to help gibbons.
Join Busch Gardens in bringing light to the Year of the Gibbon! Stay tuned for more blogs and updates on our amazing gibbons and be sure to visit Milo and Kodo on your next visit!
