20 Reasons to Visit Tampa Bay in May
RIVER FEST (May 2-3)
Come out and celebrate the Tampa Riverwalk with a party 2.5 miles long. With the recently christening of Kennedy Boulevard Plaza, the Riverwalk’s last major segment, downtown now has an unbroken path for walking, running and biking along the Hillsborough River waterfront. The Riverwalk links many of Tampa Bay’s most popular attractions like gems on a string. You can sample most of them for free during the festival. Grab some two-wheeled transport from Coast Bike Share or take to the water on paddleboards, water bikes or and eBoat. There’ll be loads of pop-up activities to keep you entertained.
MAYOR’S MAC & CHEESE THROWDOWN (May 2)
If you come for River Fest, stick around Saturday afternoon for the Mayor’s Mac-n-Cheese Throwdown. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park will be filled with Tampa Bay’s best chefs offering up their interpretation of everyone’s favorite comfort food. Tastings run through 7 p.m. with a concert to follow. In between, another trip along the Riverwalk will burn off all that cheesy goodness.
TROPICAL HEATWAVE (May 1-2)
Tampa Bay’s historic Ybor City district will be wall-to-wall music on Friday and Saturday when Tropical Heatwave, the annual fundraiser for community radio station WMNF-FM, takes over the new concert venue at Ybor’s iconic Cuban Club. The music line-up covers marching band, rockabilly, blues, zydeco, jazz and even spoken word performances. Along with local bands, the roster includes groups from as far away as Portland, Oregon, New York City and Austin, Texas. Tickets are $30 a day or $42 for the weekend. The best part: The TECO Line Historic Streetcar will ferry you from River Fest to Ybor City on Saturday.
BLOODY MARY FESTIVAL (May 3)
By the time you've done everything Tampa Bay has to offer on Friday and Saturday, you might need a visit to Sunday's Tampa Bay Blood Mary Festival at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. The festival, which moves in after the mac-n-cheese move out, carries over the momentum from Saturday's River Fest festivities and Tropical Heatwave -- it you're up that early. Unlike there rest of River Fest's events, you'll need a ticket and an over-21 ID for this one.
ZOOMINATIONS (through May 31)
May is the final month for Zoominations, the Chinese lantern festival on display at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo. Princess Ulele statue unveiled
The owners of Tampa Bay's Ulele restaurant unveiled this week a bronze statue of their restaurant's name.
The statue of Princess Ulele stands across from the entrance to the restaurant, which sits at the northern end of the Tampa Riverwalk just minutes from downtown. The statue depicts the princess with one hand raised as she beseeches her people to spare the life of Spanish explorer Juan Ortiz as he was about to be murdered as revenge against Europeans in Florida. The story has led some to describe the princess as Florida' version of Pocahantas, who begged for Capt. John Smith's life in Virginia.
The statue stands next to the refurbished spring that also bears her name.
Ulele owner Richard Gonzmart unveiled the statue on Wednesday. Gonzmart's family has been in the restaurant business in Tampa Bay for five generations. In addition to Ulele, it owns Ybor City's Columbia Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Florida. Ulele displays pieces from Gonzmart's own art collection, including a bust of Princess Ulele, an enormous metal horse sculpture and paintings hung on the walls of the restored former pumphouse.
Ulele takes its culinary inspiration from foodstuffs available to Native Americans in the early years of Florida's history. The menu is rich with oysters, seafood, local meats and vegetarian options.
Since it opened last summer, Ulele has earned a top rating from the users of Open Table reservation service. It was also featured on chef Emeril Lagasse's "Emeril's Florida" program on the Cooking Channel.

FDOT funds streetcar expansion study
Tampa Bay's TECO Historic Streetcar, which ferries visitors from downtown through the Channel District to Ybor City, will get a financial shot in the arm from the Florida Department of Transportation in the form of a study to look at expanding the line to Tampa Heights.
According to the City of Tampa:
The study will evaluate how to best extend the route, through downtown and potentially to historic Tampa Heights. The study will address potential ridership data, environmental impacts, and economic development opportunities as well as refine capital and operational costs. It will also study modernizing the historic system, allowing the streetcar to seamlessly integrate with the unprecedented wave of development downtown. As a next step, the City and FDOT will work together to further clarify the study’s primary goals and develop a timeline for completion.
The FDOT has agreed to work with the city and CSX railroad to ensure safe crossing of working railroad tracks that run through downtown. The streetcar already crosses an active CSX line on its way to Ybor City.
Paul Steinman, chief of the Tampa Bay FDOT district said: “I share the belief that a strategic extension of the streetcar would support the continued growth and redevelopment within Tampa’s urban core. We are hopeful about the potential and feasibility for the project, and we look forward to continuing the strong partnerships we have with the city and [Hillsborough] County.”
FDOT’s funding will be available in July, the start of the state's 2016 budget year. The City of Tampa will provide $250,000 in matching funds.
The TECO Historic Streetcar began operating nearly 15 years ago. Today, nine cars -- some restored, some replicas -- run the route between downtown and the city's historic Latin Quarter. Along the way, the line passes through the city's convention district, provides access to Channelside Bay Plaza, the Port of Tampa cruise ship terminal, and The Florida Aquarium.

New Ybor City hotel clears hurdle
Developers planning a new four-star hotel in Ybor City, Tampa Bay's historic Latin Quarter, won approval from the City of Tampa's historic preservation officials this week.
As planned, the 180-room hotel would fill a city block on the western end of Ybor City at Seventh Avenue and North 15th Street. The design envisions balconies and other amenities that would mesh with Ybor City's existing 19th Century architecture. As this point, the hotel doesn't have a brand.
According to the Tampa Tribune, the developers see promise in their project and in the neighborhood.
“This is new ground for everybody,” said Alex Walter, an owner of Walson Ventures LLC, one of the partners backing the project. “We’re really trying to expand the community, and this is a sign the neighborhood and the Tampa community is saying they are ready for it.”
The hotel's chief architect, Alberto Alfonso, has designed projects in Ybor City and across Florida. He's one of several people involved in the project who have deep roots in the community, the historic heart of Tampa Bay's immigrant population. For decades, those immigrants made Ybor City the world's hub of cigar manufacturing, producing millions of cigars by hand. While Ybor City still prides itself on its hand-rolled cigars, lately it has become the local hub for a new hand-made favorite: craft beer. Ybor City is home to Cigar City Cider and Mead Co., Tampa Bay Brewing Co., Coppertail Brewing Co., and, soon, Rock Brothers Brewery.
According to the Tribune:
[The] designers envisioned a project that brings new life to Ybor City but also pays homage to and celebrates the classic Havana and Tampa architecture of the neighborhood. Backers plan to resurrect Las Novedades, one of Tampa’s original restaurants, at a space in a four-story hotel wrapped in balconies overlooking the street.
The new project will be the fourth hotel in Ybor City. The district already is home to the historic Don Vicente de Ybor Inn, named for the district's cigar baron founder, along with the Hampton Inn Tampa Ybor City and the Hilton Garden Inn Tampa.
Groundbreaking on the new hotel could come this summer.

TripAdvisor: Tampa eBoats ranks No. 1
TripAdvisor users have ranked Tampa eBoats the top outdoor activity in Tampa Bay.
We can understand why after reading review like this from Anna K. from Oakland, Calif.:
We rented an eboat for 4 hours. We toured the bay, harbor, and river. The staff are awesome. Very friendly, funny, and helpful. They tell you all you need to know to drive your boat and give you a map. The boat is great and the sights are beautiful.
Tampa eBoats, based at the public docks outside the Sail Pavilion and Tampa Convention Center, rents electric-powered 8- to 10-person boats for excursions around Tampa Bay's sparkling waterfront. For as little as one hour and as many as four, you can explore the lower reaches of the Hillsborough River and the channels around Harbour Island and Davis Islands. While you're out, swing buy Jackson's Bistro or one of our other waterfront restaurants. Soon the city will add docks to Water Works Park, making the popular Ulele restaurant available to boaters.
It's a great way to go boating without having to buy a boat.
You can rent a captain to pilot your eBoat, or, if you want to be daring, take the helm yourself after a quick lesson in driving and parking. Believe me -- if this landlubber can do it, you can, too.
An afternoon on a eBoat is a great way to spend time with family and friends. It's also a way to get a new perspective on the city most people see only from the land.

Come for the Riverwalk, stay for the fest
Come out to celebrate Tampa Bay's newest attraction, the Tampa Riverwalk.
Forty years in the making, the Riverwalk opened its last major segment last month, creating an unbroken 2.5-mile pedestrian path linking some of the areas top attractions like gems on a string.
On May 2 and 3, Riverfest -- the city's newest annual event -- will turn the waterfront destination into one big party, with events spread its entire length, from the Tampa Bay History Center to Water Works Park.
The party will coincide on Saturday with the Mayor's Mac 'n' Cheese Throwdown, a comfort food cook-off in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park.
Here's what Mayor Bob Buckhorn has to say about the overlapping parties:
“All of the pieces are in place for us to finally be able to truly take advantage of our riverfront – the cultural assets, the parks and public spaces, and of course, the Riverwalk that connects it all. Riverfest is more than a weekend of events and activities; it’s a celebration of the transformation of our downtown and our best natural asset, the Hillsborough River,” said Mayor Bob Buckhorn. “Mac and cheese is comfort food at its best, and I’m looking forward to seeing what our local eateries will cook up for the Throwdown this year.”
Riverfest will include events and activities at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, Tampa Convention Center, and The Florida Aquarium as well as in the city parks strung along the path. The Tampa Museum of Art, Florida Museum of Photographic Arts, and Tampa Bay History Center (children only) will all feature free admission on Saturday.
The Plank pop-up bar, which appeared briefly to celebrate the opening of the new Kennedy Boulevard Plaza segment, will make another appearance, this time at MacDill Park.
The Mayor’s Mac n’ Cheese Throwdown will anchor the events on Saturday. Tasting will be available from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., as supplies last. The RiverFest concert, which will kick-off with headliner G. Love & Special Sauce beginning at 7 p.m. The evening’s festivities will culminate with fireworks at 10:30 p.m.
“The opening of Kennedy Plaza has been a game changer for the Riverwalk, connecting the cultural assets, the parks and public spaces along the waterfront. RiverFest is the first opportunity to celebrate Tampa’s new Riverwalk,” said Shaun Drinkard, Executive Director of Friends of the Riverwalk.
Riverfest will raise money for Friends of the Riverwalk, a local nonprofit that works to improve and enhance the Tampa Riverwalk in a variety of ways, including events and programs.
